Author's Choice - by flamingly subjective opinion, these fics are the better ones around here. (Though this is not to say that I think all the rest are flaming shit; if they weren't, they wouldn't be here.)

These are the ones where I managed to open a vein onto the page, although not necessary my own. Or where I hit something that I think is just right, that works, that still rings in my head months or years after I wrote it. Or where I crawled so deep into a character's head that I felt like I understood them on some profound level.

Some of these are the ones that kept me up at night, or the ones that shook me to the marrow with the simple act of writing them. And some of these are the ones where I stumbled across one turn of phrase that I'm terribly proud of. And some of these are just hot porn.

Some of these, I admit, are also the ones that got good reviews. I try to avoid utter subjectivity, after all. It makes me feel silly.

You'll notice that these tend to be longer and have more author's notes and such associated with them. Probably not particularly surprising; what I really love is what I put that much effort into. You'll also notice that these tend to have more canonlit-Y tags than average. One of my theories about fanfiction is that one of its highest functions is to comment upon its canon, to enhance and modify our understanding of it; fanfiction can function almost like criticism in that sense. A good piece of fanfiction, therefore, must not only be well-written, well-balanced, vivid and interesting and so forth, but it must also interact in interesting ways with its canon. So, without knowing that canon, it can be difficult or impossible to understand what that piece is saying.

You'll also notice that I'm a pretentious git. But I doubt that's news by now.
