Revolutionary Girl Utena - an anime, directed by the inscrutable Kunihiko Ikuhara, which is notoriously difficult to describe in any way that makes sense. On various levels, it has been known to be a lesbian schoolgirl romance, to shojo anime what Watchmen is to superhero comics, an extended exercise in psychological torture, a theatrical symbol play that develops and then deepens its own semiotic language, a heartwrending study of brother-sister incest and sexual abuse, a fascinating fairy tale hack, trippy nonsense, and a clever and frighteningly profound magical allegory.

The manga is a different continuity, and relatively fluff; the movie is also a different continuity, and relatively more of an acid trip; the series is by far the best version, but cannot be judged by the first seaon.

It is as difficult a fandom to write in as it is to describe. Utena has an incredibly distinct flavor and symbolism (while at the same time highly referential of various obscurities and occultisms) that can be a delicious and frustrating challenge to capture in prose. And, too, it is a difficult fandom to find; though a somewhat surprising number of people know it, given how fiercely its fans will proselytize it (ah, I speak from experience), the number who participates in fandom is low. But generally brilliant.
